We're sad to say that despite all the loving effort and participation of our community members, we're going to have to put summations on a semi-permanent hiatus. Unfortunately, neither Mia nor I will have time in the forseeable future to be maintaining the community (and administering the necessary whippings) as we should, nor do we want to delegate everything to poor Jess. We hope that people have been encouraged by their time here and from sharing their works and their wordcounts with us, and if nothing else, we're proud of those who did their best and managed to write more than they might otherwise have.

Keep up the good work, Summaries. ♥

We may consider reviving the community down the line, when Mia and I manage to unbury ourselves from University deadlines. Until then, we welcome people to keep posting here, even though your modly overlords probably won't have time to do more than check in briefly every so often. You're welcome to use this post as a closing post, to show us your final wordcounts (we will applaud properly with pictures of kittens and/or cake) or as a springboard to keep going and trying to reach your chosen Tier. :3

Thank you all, for your time and for sharing your stories with us. ♥

~Cy (darklightshades) & Mia (miir)

[WED12] Line up for your whippings!

Yes, Summaries, it has been a lovely little break for pervy!mod and sleepy!mod, but we sincerely hope none of you have been slacking in our absence! Your first Progress Report for Week 12 starts now.

31st March, 2010
 Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3 Tier 4 Tier 5 Tier 6
daily 10960 21920 32880 43840 54800 65760
weekdays 11600 23200 34800 46400 58000 69600
* Note: daily word counts are based on writing all 365 days of the first round. Weekday word counts are an approximation -- 200 words per weekday, no writing on Saturdays or Sundays, with room to spare for two weeks off. Keeping to this tally will give you a word count in excess of your tier goal. Community goal is 1,720,000 words. If you would like a copy of the spreadsheet to keep track of your word counts outside our progress reports, you can find it here

We would very much appreciate some more feedback on our feature post from last week, and would also like to ask the community how they feel about this week's community activity. Would you like another feature (pervy!mod is thinking of volunteering for the writing of it) or something a little more frivolous? Memes? Drabbles? Let us know in the comments!

Edit: Whoops, forgot! Here is your progress bar! Use it well~♥

[THU11] Go the distance

Oh my goodness. Has it been... a while? Yes, yes it has.

We'd like to apologize, first of all, for disappearing like that. Most of the fault lies with me -- the past few weeks I've been trying to deal with a lot of crushing issues that left little space or energy to write. Not enough spoons. But anyway, having confronted those problems has helped, in that they're not going away but they're deal-able now. So here's to trying to get back and picking up the cudgels. We're sorry, Summaries. It's particularly bad because we're supposed to be working hard... Ah, we have a lot of catching up to do. We'll have a progress report this weekend, and there will be flogging. Of your mods. Sob.

How is everyone? How have you been doing? As for us, Summations-wise... We're thinking of revising the format of community posts after having had some time with the twice-a-week progress report. How does a weekly feature + a weekly progress report sound, instead? Not that we're drawing a hard line between one and the other -- you're welcome to raise any questions, wail about your wordcount, or discuss certain topics in either post -- but it might be nice to have some space devoted primarily to content. Writing about writing, and things like that. We'd also like to move to a greater sense of participation in writing posts, in that we'd like to actively ask people if they'd be willing to do link spams or article recs to share with the community. We think it will help us not only have a more reliable stream of content, but also so that everyone can claim the community more, if that makes sense, because it's all ours.

I'm not going to run a poll yet, but please let us know what you think in the comments. We're open to changing the posting days too, if you have any suggestions for better posting days.

Anyway, in light of the weekly feature, here's our first one! Katie (pookaseraph) was kind enough to contribute some essays featuring her thoughts on writing. If you'll remember, some time ago we asked if people would be interested in doing a writeup of, well, how they wrote, their writing history, what they wanted to do as writers. This is the first essay in that vein, and I very much hope there will be others to follow.

In her contribution, Katie talks about how she writes, how she views her process, and what she's learned from her past writing. She talks about writing about ideas, which I personally found inspiring. Even if this isn't the way you write, or even if your writing history may be quite different, I think there's a lot to be gleaned from reading what she shares. The first time I read this I enjoyed seeing how another person thought and also learned some very helpful things about self-examination and aiming for what one really wants. I'm excited about posting this for everyone here to read, and I hope that people will be encouraged to talk about their own processes and experiences as well. Find her article behind the cut, and happy reading! Thanks so much to pookaseraph for sharing her thoughts and words with us!

Due to extreme busyness in the lives of pervy!mod and sleepy!mod, neither of whom are currently getting their necessary allotment of sleeping or perving, updates and activity checks will be slow for the next week or two while RL chews us up and spits us back out. We apologise for the absence, but expect to see lots of good writing done in the meantime!! /STERN LOOK AT AL OF YOU

Here is your incentive, MORE CAKE:

Recipe here at bakerella.com.

In our absence, we have arranged our feature post to be done by a mysterious masked lady one of our generous and talented community members. ♥ (WHOSE EMAIL I STILL NEED TO ANSWER, I AM SO SORRY, I WILL GET ON THAT AS SOON AS I CAN, I SWEAR). We will hopefully have that up some time this week, so stay tuned! Summations shall still be running as best we are able to manage.
Greetings Summaries! Here is your activity check, once again running slightly late and pervy mod and sleepy mod are still recovering from their exhausting reunion. We kind of wore ourselves out, alas. ♥

However! This is no call for slacking! I notice some of you have not been as prompt with your activity checks these last couple of weeks, and shall be keeping my eye on you. /LOOMS OVER

Though some of you have repented adequately, and shall escape whippings...for now. In the meantime, your progress meter can be found here. Kindly make use of it, or join the line for the whipping post.

Now for today's discussion, since spirits and vigour seem to be lagging a bit...we're going to talk about the positive aspects of writing. Unless you have truly strange ideals like Mia, I would think most of us write for some sense of reward or fulfilment (unless that's not the case? If so, I'd be interested in hearing it!).

So what about writing makes you feel good? Is it the satisfaction of a job well done? Is it the feedback you get from people reading it? Is it the knowledge that your style is improving with each piece you write? If you roleplay, is it because you're proud of your characterisation? Because you like exploring the depths that your canon didn't fill? If you write original fic, do you get a surge of pride when you start working on a new character or story line?

This is a feel-good post. ♥ Tell us why writing is awesome!

PS: MIA AND JESS, YOU ARE BOTH FIRST ON MY WHIPPING LIST. I EXPECT PROMPT WORD COUNTS. /STAAAAAAAAAARE

[WED07] Onward into the breach

What, it's Thursday Wednesday already? Where did all the procrastination time go?

Dear Summaries, I should be sleeping but I cannot sleep, and I should be emailing but I cannot email-- and then I remembered the Wednesday post! Here is a directionless ramble. While at the beach I was thinking about writing and... the sea. Yes. And I thought, writing is like the sea!

--Or something. The next half of the analogy ran off and left me hanging here. My brain says, "WRITING IS LIKE THE SEA, IT IS BOTH BEAUTIFUL AND TERRIFYING; ALSO, IT INVOLVES SHARKS," which I guess will have to do for now.

Pretend I've been posting my own word counts. I will later today, I promise. I need to get my whipping cred back. Oh, also, shoutout of love and support to tasogareika, who (for the reports I've seen her make) has been doing really well with her tier 6 commitment. And, would anyone like to volunteer for one of those member feature posts discussed in one of the previous posts, for posting this Saturday?

I was thinking of what to share here, and then I thought: what about a favorite poem? Maybe next week we can have a favorite comic strip or a favorite painting. For now, how about poetry? Here's one I really like.

To the Desert
Benjamin Alire Saénz

I came to you one rainless August night.
You taught me how to live without the rain.
You are thirst and thirst is all I know.
You are sand, wind, sun, and burning sky,
The hottest blue. You blow a breeze and brand
Your breath into my mouth. You reach--then bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.

You wrap your name tight around my ribs
And keep me warm. I was born for you.
Above, below, by you, by you surrounded.
I wake to you at dawn. Never break your
Knot. Reach, rise, blow, Sálvame, mi dios,
Trágame, mi tierra. Salva, traga,
Break me,
I am bread. I will be the water for your thirst.

There! How are you doing? Thankfully I haven't fallen behind (yet) thanks to the buffer I have, but... man. This week will be catchup.

--Okay, let me abase myself and apologize (weepily) for the lateness and the absence. darklightshades spent a week and a half here, we were caught up in bliss and gorging on all sorts of food (roast pig! snails! crispy catfish! cupcakes! dalandan juice!), and the past few days I have been wallowing in the slough of her absence and trying to cheer myself up by gaming my head off. Or, well. Coming up with new ways to break the world.

So getting back into the groove has been a little difficult, and I think to force myself to shake off the rust I'll use Dr Wicked's Write or Die, if only to break the block in my fingers. Tomorrow I'll be using the tool set to the 48-minute timer, although I haven't decided what consequence/grace period I'll pick yet. I'm hoping it will force me to get my thoughts down on at least one of the original pieces I want to start working on. If you try it out, let us know how it went!

It's been a little more than a month since we first started. I know that we all came to this community, and to this wordcount challenge, with different goals; for myself, the projects I'm working on have changed (not too much, just a little) since I first started. Right now I'm prioritizing the modern-day jeweler/mangkukulam story I'm doing for originalbigbang, and desperately trying to come up with a, well, plot for my wuxia story for imaginarybeasts. (Confession: I've also been eyeing [community profile] hardmode these past few days -- I'm not sure I'll signup (I probably won't), but hey, if you're interested, go for it!) None of the projects I mentioned in my signup have changed -- it's just that my schedule (which stories I want to finish first, etc) has shifted a little.

How about you? Are you still working on the same projects you started with? Have you started writing some new ones since we began?
